Life
A Sophisticated City
Havana is one of the most culturally rich cities in the Western
Hemisphere. The architecture in Old Havana – with buildings
spanning several centuries – attracts admiration from visitors
from all over the world. This is partly due to the active preservation
of historic buildings by the Cuban government, and also because
there hasn't been enough money to build the modern skyscrapers that
have changed other historic cities.
Although people do not have much money to spend, they enjoy the
trappings of modern life. There is opera, classical music and theatre
in the magnificent Opera House, and the national dance company has
an international reputation. Cinemas are crowded, especially on
weekends. Romantic couples enjoy walking along the tree-lined pedestrian
avenue called The Prado, which begins at Lovers Park.
But the two most popular cultural pastimes may be music and baseball.
Saturday night is baseball night in Havana, and passions run particularly
high when the home team takes on arch rival Santiago. Tickets are
just a few cents. Many players from Havana have gone on to pitch
for Major League teams such as the New York Yankees, though often
they have broken Cuban law by moving to the United States
Cuban music – with its mixture of Spanish, African and American
influences – is popular and influential throughout the world,
and was highlighted in the popular movie, The Buena Vista Social
Club.
