Greening of Havana
A City of Farmers

By some estimates, as many as 100,000 Havana residents are involved in growing food. Many work their own backyard gardens, while others join together in collectives to work vacant plots of land provided by the State. Still others hire themselves out to work fields started in front of colleges, hospitals, factories and office buildings.

Food production in the city has gone up 50 times since the mid 1990s. According to official figures, more than 90% of perishable vegetables eaten in Havana are grown locally. More than a million tonnes of milk and eggs and meat are being produced as well.
